Volkswagen presented a prototype of a robotic charging station

Volkswagen showcases its mobile robot for charging electric vehicles in garages and parking lots.

A year after announcing the development of a prototype, the German automaker decided to show how the autonomous device works in practice. In a short video presents the process of gripping, towing and connecting the mobile charging station to the vehicle.

According to the description, after activation through a special application or a communication system with the car, the robot brings a mobile battery to the car, opens the lid on its own, connects the trailer and leaves it working while serving other cars. The system monitors the charging process, and after its completion, the bot returns, turns off the mobile energy storage and returns it back to the power source.

Volkswagen says this solution will effectively compensate for the lack of the necessary infrastructure to charge electric vehicles in parking lots and garages. The company has not yet announced the timing of the release of the robotic system, since it is still engaged in its modernization. However, mobile fast charging stations should hit the market in 2021..
