Telegram co-founder Nikolai Durov has published a description of the Telegram Open Network consensus protocol called Catchain.
According to document, Catchain is a Byzantine Generals Problem Algorithm (BFT) executed on a blockchain with PoS, which generally resembles the protocols used in NEO or Cosmos. BFT provides a solution to the reliability problem, even if some of the nodes are unreliable. Therefore, Catchain will work efficiently until more than a third of the nodes become fraudulent..
Each new block will be created in about 5 seconds during the generation round, in which validators have a limited time to agree, or otherwise, the network misses it..
The system will check all blocks when they are formed, and not after they are closed. In this case, the roles of validators will be clearly distributed: some will be engaged in the creation of blocks, while others will bring it to a vote, in which all the remaining will take part..
The main Telegram chain will be able to have up to 100 validators, and its branches are 10-30.
