The study showed that incredibly large black holes can exist in the universe, the size of which is much larger than supermassive.
Is considered, that supermassive black holes form in their host galaxies and reach enormous sizes, swallowing up the surrounding stars and gas or merging with other BHs. Therefore, in previous studies, scientists assumed that their maximum mass could only slightly exceed 10 billion solar masses.
However, in their recent work, astrophysicists from Queen Mary University of London talk about the possibility of the existence «colossal black holes». They are considering an alternative way of the formation of primary BHs that appeared in the early Universe, long before first galaxies.
Scientists believe that since at that time black holes were formed as a result of the collapse of entire regions of space due to their increased density, they can have incredibly huge sizes, significantly exceeding the possible limit of supermassive.
Although on their own such objects will not help scientists solve the mystery of dark matter, their combination with smaller primary BHs can do this.
