Scientists have been able to convert natural gas into a non-explosive solid that is easy to store

Chemists have developed a method for converting natural gas into a non-explosive solid gas hydrate that can be easily stored and transported.

In the depths, natural gas is in the form of combustible ice, but it takes millions of years to naturally transform into this form. A team from the National University of Singapore has found a quick and non-toxic way to confine him in «cells» from water molecules.

Researchers Developed A Supplement Blend Containing The Essential Amino Acid  L-tryptophan, which significantly accelerates the conversion of natural gas into a solid hydrate. In laboratory conditions, after mixing the ingredients, the whole process took less than 15 minutes, and the gas volume decreased 90 times.

The final product is very stable and can be stored safely under –five °C and atmospheric pressure. This is much simpler than the alternative method, which provides for its liquefaction at –160 °C and compression up to 250 atmospheres.

The team is currently developing a technology for converting large volumes of gas for industrial applications..

Recall that recently, scientists have also found a way to store hydrogen in solid form. at room temperature.
