Elite Ocean Yachts Go Solar

Nearly the entire outer surface of giant ocean yacht SolarImpact is covered in solar panels, allowing endless cruising in comfort without worrying about fuel.

The yacht is covered with 300 sq.m. solar panels that generate 320 kWh per day in good weather. When  with a length of 24 meters and a mass of 70 tons, it can reach speeds of up to 22 knots (48 km / h) with an engine of 1341 hp. To store energy, the vessel is equipped with a battery, the charge of which is enough for 10 hours of movement at cruising speed. In parallel, he partially recovers from the sun.

If you wish, you can move continuously, but then the maximum speed will not be about 9 km / h. In this mode, a trip around the world will take half a year. By comparison, a conventional yacht would burn about 100 liters of fuel per hour at 18.5 km / h..

However, in bad weather conditions or for extended driving at high speed, two additional diesel engines can be used. At the same time, the drive systems are automated, thanks to built-in artificial intelligence, which allows one person to make any maneuvers.
