A prototype of a battery with glass electrolyte was created, the capacity of which only grows over time

The research team claims to have created a prototype of a solid-state lithium battery with a glass powder electrolyte that has twice the capacity of traditional lithium-ion storage devices and increases over time..

The technology described by scientists has caused a lot of criticism from the scientific community due to the unusual property of increasing efficiency during operation. According to the published chart, there is an increase in the capacity of the device over approximately 300 charge-discharge cycles, and the lifespan is at least 23 thousand working cycles..

Researchers attribute the unique characteristics to the fact that glass electrolyte is  ferroelectric  material whose polarization changes in the presence of an external field. Thus, in the process of work, effective mixing of the substance occurs, and over time, the ideal configuration of each electromagnetic dipole is found..

The authors of the study from the University of Porto and the University of Texas at Austin say the prototype not only has a higher capacity, but is significantly lighter than other lithium-ion battery options. Weight reduction is achieved due to the fact that the electrolyte is not flammable, therefore no sealing of individual elements and no temperature control system required.

Such features have already interested a group of manufacturers who are planning to license the technology. Inventors Expect First Commercial Samples of Glass Batteries for Electric Vehicles and Home Appliances in 2022.

Recently scientists have also developed a new chemical type cathode that increases the energy density of lithium-ion storage devices, keeping them safe.
